Fungal Names

Fungal Names, a global data repository of fungal taxonomy, is established by the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The repository aims at providing integrated services on Fungi and fungus-like organisms involving fungal name registration, species identification, specimen preservation, taxonomists overview and related information query, statistics or data sharing for people worked with or interested in mycology.

History of Fungal Names

Fungal Names was launched in September 2011 and authorized by the International Nomenclature Committee for Fungi (NCF) as one of the three global fungal names registration repositories together with Index Fungorum and MycoBank in December 2012.

In August 2012, Fungal Names, Index Fungorum and MycoBank reached the cooperation intention of running independently and real-time synchronization among the three registration repositories. On August 8, 2014, the three registration repositories were approved as the international fungal name registration repositories in the 10th International Mycology Congress and were written into the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (Art. 5.1, San Juan Chapter F).

Fungal Names was redesigned with the support of the National Microbiology Data Center (NMDC) and relaunched in June, 2022 (https://nmdc.cn/fungalnames/). Besides the basic registration service, the redesigned Fungal Names provides a variety of new functions such as global fungal name query, identification of fungi, culture collection and herbarium or tanxonomist information query, data sharing, etc.

Partnership and Acknowledgement

Index Fungorum and Fungal Names has carried in-depth cooperation with each other since 2011. Both sides have maintained data sharing and synchronization for a long time and carried out a series of collaborative research works. Dr. Paul Kirk, head of Index Fungorum, has put forward many constructive suggestions for the establishment of Fungal Names. Sincere gratitude to Index Fungorum and Dr. Paul Kirk for their contribution to Fungal Names.

We thank all researchers, staffs and users who had, have and will contribute to the construction of Fungal Names in any way: Yijian Yao, Lei Cai, Linhuan Wu, Juncai Ma, Wenying Zhuang, Ke Wang, Fang Wang, Guomei Fan, Bo Li, Qinglan Sun, Jinhe Su, Fanyu Meng, Shuai Wang, Zhengfei Yu, Dong Han, Zhiqiang Li, Xiaoxiao Wang, Qingxiao Liu, Tongchen Yang, Jianyun Zhuang, Li Huang, Zhuo Du, Shiliang Liu, Man Cai, Yonghui Wang, Liwei Zhou, Zhaoqing Zeng, Ruilin Zhao, Qiuxia Yang, Mengle Xie (Name list to be continued).
